Nasal and Sinus Problems
Common Nasal and Sinus Conditions
Dr. Boon has extensive experience in treating nasal and sinus conditions. Common sinus and nasal problems include:
- Nasal Congestion
- Allergic Rhinitis
- Runny Nose
- Sinus Infection
- Decreased Sense of Smell
Many of these conditions can be treated with medical therapy including prescription and non-prescription medications. For a limited number of patients, surgical treatments may offer a better long-term solution to treat nasal complaints.
Sinuses include eight cavities located around the nasal cavity and within the bones of the face including the cheekbones, forehead and around the eyes.
The sinuses play an active role in our overall health. When the tissues that line the sinuses become inflamed, the condition is called sinusitis.
Sinusitis lasting more than eight weeks or that keeps coming back is considered chronic. A host of factors can contribute to chronic sinusitis.
Some causes include conditions in the patient such as allergies and asthma or environmental factors including exposure to pollution, dust, mold, and cigarette smoke.
Many chronic sinus conditions are caused by anatomical factors such as nasal polyps, a deviated septum, or narrowed ostia (the opening connecting a sinus to the nasal cavity). The inflammation itself is usually caused by bacteria, viruses, and mold.
