Inspire Therapy for Sleep Apnea

Inspire Therapy treatment is a new and novel treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).  It involves implanting a small device that gently stimulates the airway muscles to limit airway collapse. This treatment can significantly improve quality of life, often improve snoring, reduce (and often, eliminate) sleep apnea.

It involves a surgically implanted device which works with the body’s native anatomy to keep the airway open during sleep.

Dr. Boon has been providing Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation therapy in the Philadelphia tri-state area since it first became available, and is one of the most experienced surgeons in the world today for treating OSA with Inspire Therapy.

Significantly Reduces Sleep Apnea Events

Inspire Therapy is FDA approved and clinically proven to significantly reduce sleep apnea events and provide better, more restful sleep. Improved quality of life for patients and their families is usually the outcome. Unlike CPAP, Inspire works from inside the body with the patient’s natural breathing process to treat obstructive sleep apnea.

Inspire upper airway stimulation therapy implantation includes a small stimulation device, a stimulation lead, and a breathing sensor. Recovery is usually associated with very limited pain and discomfort.

How Inspire Therapy Works

The Inspire system involves a small implanted device that senses breathing patterns and delivers mild stimulation to key airway muscles keeping the airway open during sleep. The device is turned on before bed and off upon awakening using a small handheld remote.

While you sleep, Inspire delivers mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve, which controls the movement of the tongue and other muscles in your airway. By stimulating this nerve, the tongue and other tissues move out of the airway so you can breathe during sleep. Dr. Boon will evaluate your overall health, review your sleep studies, and perform a physical examination of your airway to determine if Inspire therapy might be right for you.

Are You a Candidate for Inspire Therapy?

Candidates for Inspire therapy include those who are:

  • Suffering from Moderate to Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Not Able to Tolerate or Benefit from CPAP
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) around 35 or less (some patients with a higher BMI can be implanted)
  • Over the Age of 22

The first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Boon to evaluate your overall health and perform an examination to determine if you are a candidate for Inspire Therapy.

What to Expect

The Inspire system is placed under the skin during an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The device is activated with a remote and throughout sleep, gently stimulates the airway to keep it open.

Once the device has been activated, patients turn on the device before sleep with a small handheld remote, and then turn it off upon awakening. Several months after implant, patients return to the sleep laboratory for final adjustments that are made in an overnight sleep study to ensure that the device is appropriately addressing the sleep apnea.
